Resources for starting, growing, and operating a business in La Demo.

Doing Business in La Demo

La Demo welcomes businesses of all sizes, from home-based startups to established employers. The city's Economic Development office works with entrepreneurs and existing businesses to streamline the licensing process, connect them with available incentives, and help identify suitable commercial properties.

The La Demo business community includes over 1,200 licensed businesses employing more than 18,000 workers. The downtown Magnolia Business District is home to 200+ shops, restaurants, and professional offices, while the Commerce Park industrial area along Highway 9 hosts manufacturing, warehousing, and logistics operations.

Starting a Business

All businesses operating within La Demo city limits are required to obtain a Business License from the City Clerk's office. The application process typically takes 5-10 business days for standard retail and office uses. Businesses involving food service, alcohol, or hazardous materials require additional permits and may take longer.

  1. Verify that your business use is permitted in your chosen location by checking the zoning map
  2. Complete the Business License Application
  3. Submit your application along with the $75 filing fee to the City Clerk
  4. Schedule any required inspections (fire, health, building) through the Permits office
  5. Receive your license and begin operations

Economic Development Incentives

Tax Increment Financing (TIF)

Qualifying projects in designated TIF districts may be eligible for property tax rebates of up to 75% over a 15-year period. Contact the Economic Development office for details and application procedures.

Visit the La Demo Chamber of Commerce for additional business resources, networking events, and the annual business directory.

Important business licensing deadlines: Annual renewals are due by January 31. Late renewals incur a $50 penalty plus $10 per day. Businesses operating without a current license are subject to citation and fines up to $500 per violation. Contact the City Clerk for questions about renewal procedures and requirements.
